Bharatmitra is amongst the oldest newspapers in India and was first published from Calcutta in 1887 under the British rule, by Shri Ambika Prasad Vajpeyi. The newspaper flourished until it was discontinued by the British Govt., in 1930 for its anti-British and pro-Independence sentiments.
Re-launched in 2005, by the great-grandson of Shri Ambika Prasad Vajpeyi, Mr. Rajendra Narayan Vajpeyi, Bharatmitra is now amongst the fastest growing morning Hindi daily newspapers. Bharatmitra is widely circulated and not only covers Kolkata, but the whole of South Bengal and even the adjoining districts of Jharkhand and Orissa as well. The newspaper is published from Kolkata from its own Printing Press in Beliaghata
